ATHENAI VS SPARTA (this is a game I created a long time ago and which I enjoy playing a lot myself )
Ancient Democratic Greece against Ancient Fascist Greece!
0) Materials needed
- 1 wooden plank, half a meter wide by three meter long
- 70 to 100 old tennis balls (you can get those at tennis centers)
- 4 tiny islands (plastic plates for instance)
- 8 wooden shields (wooden planks with TWO cotton strips fixed with shooting stables. One smaller for the hand, one somewhat larger for the underarm. These shields should fit like real ancient or medieval soldier shields) 4 of them are Athenai only, 4 of them Spartan only
1) draw the playing field
Draw the borders of a large field with white chalk, of the size of a tennis field (more or less). In the middle you draw a 'river' about three meters wide, depending on the age of the players. Athletic people might just jump over it, but most people shouldn't be able to.
Draw an 'Imperial Area' on each opposite sites of the field, with the river going up down right in the middle of the field, crossing the wide of the field (not the length). Each 'Imperial Area' should be about 4 square meters
2) Place the flags
An Athenai flag is placed in one Imperial area, a Spartan flag in the other
(these could just as well be 'Imperial Crowns' or 'Imperial Life Elexirs' or whatever, anything important that symbolises
the strength and proud of the two opposing factions)
3) Place the 'Bridge'
Place the wooden plank as such that it crosses the river more or less in the middle of the field
4) Place the 'tiny islands' chaotically anywhere in the river
5) Divide the tennis balls among the two factions
6) Divide the players among the two factions evenly
7) Each faction elects one king (majority vote)
8) There must be chosen one game judge. He must carry a whistle.
GAME RULES
1) GOAL: Catch the flag of the other faction and bring it in your own Imperial Area.
2) If someone hits you DIRECTLY with a tennis ball you are out for 3 minutes: sit outside of the field. When a ball bounces and then hits you it does not count as a hit. Note that you can accidently hit a friendly player by hitting him directly.
3) The game judge decides if someone is out or not and looks at the time for people to get in the game again. He watches the river and the borders closely. When the judge blows his whistle all players freeze until the judge whistles again. This makes it possible for the judge to examine the positions of the players.
4) If a player steps in the river WITHOUT his feet touching the riversides, an island, or the bridge he is out for 3 minutes.
5) Tennis balls can be picked up anywhere.
6) If a player touches outside the borders of the field with any part of his body he is out for three minutes.
7) A king has three lives, all other players are soldiers and have only one life. This counts for the tennis balls only. The river and the outside borders are still lethal.
8) Any player can pick up one shield to protect themselves from the tennis balls.
9) A player cannot be killed within their Imperial Area.
10) If a player carrying the flag gets hit he should drop the flag immediately. A regular soldier then has to go out. The king can continue but he has to drop the flag just like a soldier has to. A player who gets hit cannot pass the flag to another player. He must DROP it. Then another player may pick it up.
11) Players that are not hit can pass a flag to one another. Flags may not be thrown, only passed hand to hand.
Players thus go in and out of the game until one site has taken a flag and brought it in the 'home' Imperial Area' while their own flag is still ALSO there. So you need to have both flags in your Imperial Area to win the game.
Okay I think this is all. Of course you can adapt these rules to your needs. It has been a long time, so I do not remember all situations that may arise that need clarifying rules. Maybe I am missing things...
I hope you guys like it
